Vietnam: PM promises to strengthen human rights to attract foreign investors & calls for companies to support climate change agenda

"Vietnam PM vows to improve human rights to attract investors" 25 November 2021

Vietnam will beef up measures to ensure human rights in an attempt to attract more foreign investors, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Thursday.

"Securing people's safety creates opportunities for investors," said Chinh at an event in Tokyo organized by the Japan External Trade Organization to promote investment.

The event was held on the final day of Chinh's visit to Japan after he met Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday. Chinh said Vietnam will "actively strengthen deep and wide international integration."

[...]"I want to thoroughly strengthen administrative reforms and eradicate corruption to benefit investors," Chinh said.

The prime minister [...] also called for more private sector support for dealing with climate change, pollution and COVID-19. "We would like to overcome [the challenges] with investors' help," he said.

"I want to work together with a long-term vision and a strategic vision," said Chinh before an audience that included representatives from major Japanese companies.

During his four-day trip, Chinh asked Japanese companies -- the top foreign investors in Vietnam -- for more investment in clean energy and in building a digital economy, meeting with Hitachi, Sumitomo, Eneos and Uniqlo operator Fast Retailing, among others, according to Vietnam's state-run media.

At the event, Japanese companies, including energy company eREX, real estate developer Mitsubishi Estate, retailer Aeon Mall and a number of trading companies, exchanged memorandums of understanding.
