Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is an international human rights organisation working to ensure respect for human rights are at the core of companies’ business models, empower communities and workers to secure their rights, and advance accountability for corporate human rights abuse. Our Global Team, based in more than 20 countries around the world, work with a rich network of activists, unions, human rights groups, and investors. Our digital platform is the lynchpin of our external communications and is in ten languages. We work across all sectors and issues related to business and human rights, with a strategic focus on the rights of workers in global supply chains, the rights of communities seeking responsible natural resource use and a just transition, and the rights of people to accountable digital technologies.
The Resource Centre has helped define the growing field of business & human rights. It has put companies in all regions on notice that their human rights conduct is being watched. It has drawn attention to corporate abuses in all countries and provided increased recognition to those companies taking positive steps to promote human rights. The Centre is widely respected for being fair, objective, and constructive in its approach to make change happen. The Resource Centre is a non-profit organisation and does not accept funding from companies.
The Research Assistant will support the Natural Resources programme in implementing the Resource Centre’s program of work related to natural resources and human rights with an emphasis on transition mineral mining. The successful candidate will develop research, analysis, and briefings for the Transition Minerals Tracker (TMT) that guides investors, companies, and civil society to understand human rights risks across the renewable energy value chain. This role will also support the thematic teams growing regional work and emerging research on equity models in Indigenous communities. Candidates who identify as Indigenous are particularly encouraged to apply.
Applicants must have:
- Good understanding of how to research and present complex information in a succinct and balanced way, with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong interest in advancing human rights in relation to natural resources projects.
- Ability to work independently, with limited supervision and under tight deadlines.
- Fluent English-language skills (reading, writing, speaking).
- Strong writing skills.
- Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
- 2+ years’ work in the field of social responsibility, human rights, natural resources (particularly on global companies’ human rights impacts)
- Proven experience in advancing human rights in relation to natural resources projects.
- Research experience in corporate disclosure on human rights using public documents such as annual reports, sustainability reports etc.
- Good understanding of human rights and natural resources, and/or attacks on human rights and environmental land defenders (including regarding land conflicts and/or land rights).
- Good understanding of the intersection of Indigenous rights and land rights/natural resources.
- Understanding and interest in climate justice.
- Experience of using datasets for analysis to various stakeholders.
- Additional language skills are a plus.
Roles & responsibilities
- Lead on research, data collection, and analysis for updates to the TMT, including assisting on research into equity models and briefings on emerging issue areas in the transition mineral sector.
- Work with the Natural Resources team and regional colleagues on communication and dissemination of research and reports, and lead on building communications materials for the TMT and other natural resource products.
- Help organize and participate in webinars and other outreach related to the TMT and other natural resource-related reports. Identifying and taking part in opportunities to promote our resources for impact.
- Website responsibilities including inputs, big issue and company dashboard updates and maintenance, and seeking company responses.
- Other administrative tasks as required.
Essential functions of the position include consistently operating a laptop, remaining in a stationary or standing position while doing so, and participating in a few video calls per day. Some regional or international travel may be expected.

Research & analytical skills: Able to search and identify relevant information online; persistent in seeking out difficult-to-find information (e.g., through desk-based research and phone calls); creative in identifying new sources of information. Experienced creating and managing Excel spreadsheets. Being open to doing some basic research and administrative tasks.
Languages: Fluent English-language skills (reading, writing, speaking); other language skills a plus.
Communication & Representation: Good writing skills, and strong understanding of how to present complex information in a succinct and balanced way.
Experience: 2+ years’ work in the field of social responsibility and/or human rights in relation to natural resources projects. Experience in researching corporate supply chains and human rights disclosure preferable. Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills required.
Self-initiative and organization: Able to use own initiative and work independently within agreed framework. Strong time management and prioritization skills, and able to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
Teamwork: Able to operate effectively and constructively with colleagues based around the world and willing to adapt work hours to liaise with team members based in other regions.
Sensitivity to security risks: Good understanding of or an interest in libel, digital and other risks that our work entails, and the risks that the defenders and communities we work with face, and ability to carefully navigate them (with the support of the team).
