Peru: Anti-mining Governor, criminalised for opposition to Bear Creek mine, claims to be victim of political vendetta

Puno Governor Walter Aduviri was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay 2 million soles in civil reparations to the Peruvian state, having been found guilty of inciting public disturbances when protesting against the proposed Santa Ana mine, a concession granted to Canadian mining company Bear Creek.  He claims to be victim of a political vendetta accusing judges, public prosecutors and private business confederation of links to criminal group, the “Cuellos Blancos”. 

In the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre invited Bear Creek to respond to allegations, the response can be found below.
