Brazil: Elections 2022, commitment to democracy and implications for human rights and business

Wikimedia Commons

Two months before the 2022 elections in Brazil, civil society in general has been organising itself calling for the defence of democracy. Two important documents were released and read in an act on August 11 at the Law School of the University of São Paulo: the Letter of the Law School of USP, signed by more than 1 million people and the Letter "In defence of Democracy and Justice", organised by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp).

Pointed out as an unprecedented moment, where workers and businessmen unite for the defence of democracy, the letters do not directly quote the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, but they do defend the Brazilian electoral process and institutions, such as the Judiciary and the Electoral Justice, themes in which public criticisms made by the president stand out.

The democratic achievements, which are at risk, must be preserved. Together with these representatives, women's, indigenous, quilombolas and organised civil society groups, in Brazil and abroad, are leading the fight to preserve democratic institutions and to combat and confront political violence, especially against human rights defenders.

We at the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre are monitoring this issue, mainly involving themes such as Labour Law, Environment and Technology, and below we bring you articles that deal with these themes of utmost importance for the country
