A member of the Guarani-Kaiowá indigenous group, Vitor Fernandes, was shot dead and at least seven other indigenous persons were wounded and several others were detained in a confrontation with the police in Amambai, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in the border region with Paraguay. Around 30 Guarani-Kaiowá people entered the Borda da Mata Farm. The area is claimed by the Guarani-Kaiowá because it is part of the 3,220 hectares allocated when the Amambai Village was created in the 1920s. Today, around 8,000 indigenous people live in the municipality and live on an area of little more than 2,500 hectares. The police were called and special troops were sent to the scene. The presence of the Military Police in an action to retake an area was questioned, given that this is the exclusive responsibility of the Federal Police when dealing with actions involving indigenous people. Amazônia Real found that some of the indigenous detained, even though they were injured, suffered psychological torture at the police station. "They intimidated them. They asked who ordered them in, who had a gun. They were being accused of being traffickers in arms and drugs. It was a speech to criminalise the indigenous people. They began to question as if the initiative was not the indigenous movement's. They took them out of the hospital even though they were wounded. The doctor discharged them and they were taken to prison, in the police van, without a court order. They left them in the police station for three nights", reported a leader.
