Lebanon's dollar crisis has worsened the plight of Bangladeshi workers, leaving them stranded

The financial crisis has further worsened the situation for thousands of Bangladeshi migrant workers in lebanon. The drop in the Lebanon central bank's foreign currency reserves have led to a shortage in dollars for businesses and individuals. Consequently, Lebanese banks have put restrictions on deposits and dollars withdrawals as well as transfers from Lebanese pounds to US dollar. As such, salaries were decimated and thousands of migrant workers have found themselves caught up in a dire economic and financial crisis unable to return home.

Migrant workers are particularly vulnerable right now, as many of them already living below the poverty line, have already lost their jobs or faced salary reduction due to the economic crisis and currency meltdown. Many of them are not only unable to send remittances home to help their families, but they are also unable to secure their basic needs and daily expenses in Lebanon.

Thousands of Bangladeshi workers have appealed for urgent repatriation and been waiting to return home. However, they are unable to pay airfare. The Bangladesh embassy in Beirut requires applicants to pay USD 400 as airfare for adults aged above 18. One now needs nearly three million Lebanese Pound to get USD 400 on the black market, which is impossible for many workers to save form a years' earnings.
