Mexico: The conflict worsens between farmers and authorities for access to water near the La Boquilla dam in Chihuahua

Flickr

Agricultural producers in Chihuahua have clashed with the National Guard, a military police force, near La Boquilla Dam, municipality of San Francisco de Conchos, in order to prevent the extraction of water in times of drought in the state. People who have confronted the National Guard have suffered violence, including tear gas. But despite the attacks against them, people continue to protest and demand respect for their right to water.

This struggle for access to water is further exacerbated by cross-border conflicts between the US and Mexico. The two countries have signed agreements about water usage, but given the changing climatic conditions, many demand that these agreements be revised.
