Philippines: Labour rights groups protest to demand respect for freedom of association at a factory supplying to global fashion brands; incl. cos. responses
On 9 June 2025, a group of labour rights activists and trade unionists held a protest to call for the cease of union busting in MetroWear factory, a subsidiary of Sports City International and alleged to be one of the suppliers of Lululemon. The labour rights groups also alleged that the factory’s closure for three month was an attempt to repress union activities and over 1,800 workers would be impacted.
Workers started to organize and join unions because they were faced with “high production quotas and excessive overtime, often skipping breaks just to meet targets.” Recently, at least five unionists were terminated by MetroWear while workers claimed that this was an act of union-busting.
Sports City International issued an announcement denying all the allegations against its subsidiary by indicating that it has complied with the labour law including respecting freedom of association, welfare of workers and dismissals of five union members.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Sports City International & Lululemon to respond to allegations associated with its alleged supplier. Their responses are available in the story.
