Russia: New law in Komi Republic is allegedly drafted to conceal environmental crimes & administrative offenses by oil companies

It is suggested to ban the use of drones in Komi: This will prevent monitoring the oil spills, 24 March 2023

In Komi Republic it is planned to ban the use of drones in the region... The project was prepared by the republican authorities, and it can enter into force on April 3. Independent ecologists note that this will complicate the observation of oil spills...

Ecologists from the independent organization "Committee for Saving Pechora" noted that in October 2022, when a large oil spill occurred at the Ukhta-Yaroslavl oil pipeline, only the launch of the drones by local activists helped to collect evidence regarding the scale of the oil spill and its entry into the rivers...

“We believe that the republic's head is not at all concerned by security issues, but rather an attempt is made to additionally cover industrial organizations from the vigilance of public observers. That is, in our opinion, the priority of the decree is to conceal environmental crimes and administrative offenses - oil spills...”, the environmentalists said.

The Save Pechora Committee recalls that after the activists used drones to shoot the oil industry, the police checked the legality of their actions. This did not lead to the preparation of protocols.
