USA: BNP Paribas in court over alleged role in Sudan human rights abuses

In September 2025, a civil trial of the French bank BNP Paribas began in the US, over its alleged complicity in Omar Al-Bashir Sudanese government’s human rights abuses through provision of financial services violating US sanctions. The class-action lawsuit brought by Sudanese refugees was originally filed in 2016. The case was dismissed in 2018 but later revived by a federal appeals court in 2019.

In October 2025, the New York jury ruled that BNP Paribas facilitated the violence of the brutal regime, making it liable for atrocities committed under his rule. The court awarded the plaintiffs over $20 million in damages.

BNP Paribas said it disagrees with the ruling and plans to appeal.
