Indonesia: Over 10,000 textile workers laid off following Sritex closure; incl. co. responses

In March 2025, it was reported that the textile manufacturer Sritex shut down, just ahead of Ramadan, laying off over 10,000 workers. The company had faced financial difficulties following the pandemic, as orders slumped, and was announced bankrupt. Workers reported that the layoffs were illegal as the company had not held proper negotiations between the labour union and management, nor did it involve mediators from the Ministry of Manpower. The workers were instead asked individually to register for termination, raising concerns about intimidation and lack of transparency regarding severance pay and holiday allowance. Workers were also not given the opportunity to reject the layoffs through formal mediation.

In March 2025, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited H&M, Fast Retailing (for UNIQLO), Walmart, Sears and Inditex (for ZARA) to respond

Three out of five of the brands responded (H&M, Fast Retailing and Inditex), while Walmart stated it would not be providing a response, and Sears did not respond.

All responding brands stated they had ceased orders at Sritex prior to its closure, with H&M stating it had phased out orders in 2023 and 2024 due to changing business needs, Fast Retailing stating it had ceased orders in 2023, due to alleged product quality issues that arose in 2022., and Inditex stating it had stopped orders over one year ago.
