On June 12, 2021, authorities seven youth leaders, namely Beny Thon, Kur Aguek, Dhieu John, Santino Doki, Jok Nun, Naywai Jok and another identified only as Adau, were arrested for protesting the dumping of waste by DAR Petroleum Operating Company Ltd (DPOC) in their town, and the alleged failure by the company to provide clean water and road repairs as required by law. DPOC is a consortium of oil exploration and production companies operating in South Sudan, composed of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Petronas, Nilepet, SINOPEC, and Tri-Ocean Energy.
