On 25 May 2024, police arrested 201 environmental rights defenders protesting outside branches of Amundi, shareholders of energy company Total Energies in Paris, France. Of those arrested, 188 were released yesterday while 13 remained in police custody.

The protesters pointed to Amundi as a major shareholder in oil giant Total Energies, which claims to be making a multi-million dollar purchase of carbon offset credits, but whose extractive activities are causing harm to the Quichua people of the Peruvian Amazon.

The environmentalists tried to enter the company building but were prevented by private security guards prevented them. In response the activists spray-painted the facade of the corporate headquarters and broke some windows, leading to their arrest.
