Japan: In rare link, suicide of employee caused by customer harassment qualifies for worker compensation

"Customer harassment caused Chiba worker's suicide, labor office says," 24 July 2024

[Unofficial description by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

The Kashiwa Labour Standards Inspection Office has officially recognised that the death by suicide of a employee at housing manufacturer Polus attributes to mental health issues caused by customer harassment.

It is rare for labour offices to acknowledge a link between suicide and customer harassment in workers’ compensation cases.

Spokesperson for Polus said that they have established an internal consultation service for employees to prevent such incidents from happening again.
