Ecuador: Mining projects of Codelco, ENAMI, ECSA and Solaris Resources face allegations of "environmental damage or complicity with violent actors", says NGO

Observatorio de Conflictos SocioAmbientales del Ecuador

The organisation Acción Ecológica has published the report "Mining Projects - Transition Minerals in Ecuador" (in Spanish), by Amanda Yépez Salazar.

The report examines the extraction of minerals for the energy transition in the country in terms of its environmental and social impacts.

In the document, the Mirador, Llurimagua and Warintza projects of the transnational companies Codelco and ENAMI, Ecuacorriente S.A. (ECSA) and Solaris Resources, respectively, are also analysed in more detail. According to Acción Ecológica, all of these projects would present "allegations of environmental damage or complicity with legal or paralegal violent actors in the territories where they operate".

Acción Ecológica highlights alleged violations of human and environmental rights, including environmental damage, violation of the right to free, prior and informed consultation, arbitrary detentions, and intimidation and threats by the companies.

We invited Codelco, ENAMI and ECSA to comment on the allegations, but the companies did not respond.

Solaris Resources had already been invited to comment on the concerns raised in previous years, and the company's responses are available.
