France: Strikes over pay & conditions at oil refineries continue as workers face a cost of living crisis while energy company profits soar
Workers at French oil refineries run by TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil's Esso France led week-long strikes for better pay and conditions amid a cost of living crisis and for a share of companies' record profits after a surge in energy prices, which allowed TotalEnergies to pay out an estimated €8 billion in dividends and an additional special dividend to investors.
In response to the strikes, TotalEnergies proposed bringing forward wage talks to bring an end to the industrial action that has disrupted supplies to almost a third of the country’s petrol stations. A spokesperson for Esso France told media that a meeting will be held with the participation of representatives from all four labor unions representing workers at the company.
