Papua New Guinea: First roundtable meeting addresses impact assessment findings

"Panguna Mine legacy impact addressed in first roundtable meeting", 10 March 2025

Key stakeholders, including Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL), the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG), and Rio Tinto, convened in Port Moresby last week for the inaugural roundtable meeting to address the findings of the Panguna Mine Legacy Impact Assessment (PMLIA).

The meeting, a result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in November, focused on developing a collaborative process to remedy the identified impacts outlined in the PMLIA report, released in December 2024. The initiative aims to create a remedy mechanism aligned with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Participants agreed on the scope for further investigations into the most critical impacts identified in the PMLIA, which will be presented to the Oversight Committee for consultation and endorsement.
