On 21st May, 9 human rights defenders including Mawanda Arafat were arrested whilst attempting to deliver a petition to Kenya Commercial Bank demanding the bank withdraw its financial support for the EACOP project.

On 23 April 2025, Nalusiba Phionah, Baribye Bob, Nayebare Gilbert, Tukamushaba Guston, Namanya Keith, Ssengonzi Joseph, Bituhanga Raymond and Ssekate Paul were also arrested at Kenya Commercial Bank’s (KCB) head offices in Kampala whilst protesting the bank's financial support for the EACOP project.

The controversial $5 billion, 1,443km heated pipeline, a joint venture between TotalEnergies, Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), CNOOC, and Tanzania’s TPDC, has become a flashpoint in climate and human rights debates and is connected to many attacks against human rights defenders raising awareness of the harms related to the project.

The Business and Human Rights Centre invited TotalEnergies Uganda to respond; its response can be found above.
