Cambodia: International community expresses concerns over human rights violations during 2023 general elections; US imposes visa restrictions and pauses foreign aid

On 23 July, over 8.2 million voters (84.58%) out of the total 9.7 million registered voters were preliminarily reported to turn out to vote at a general election. Workers were given three-day off with pay as encouragement for them to return to their hometown for voting. Preliminary results announced by the National Election Committee indicated that the ruling Cambodian People's Party win 120 seats of the National Assembly while FUNCINPEC gain 5 seats with the total number of seats being at 125. The 2023 elections took place against the backdrop of deteriorating human rights situation with arrests and charges of human rights defenders and activists as well as the revocation of independent media outlet's license.

International NGOs and international community have expressed serious concerns over the election process and human rights violations while the environment for civil society has been very restrictive.
