Denmark: Demonstrators block Maersk headquarters protesting alleged transportation of military equipment to Israel; incl. company comment

"Protesters block access to Maersk headquarters"

Greta Thunberg is reportedly among the protesters blocking the entrance against to the HQ of the world’s second-largest container line.

Demonstrators gathered at Maersk’s headquarters in Copenhagen on Monday morning. They are protesting against the shipping company’s transportation of military equipment to Israel, according to a press release.

The police are on the scene. Pictures show that hundreds of people are present at the headquarters. According to the press release, Swede Greta Thunberg is among the participants in Monday’s blockade.

Copenhagen Police inform ShippingWatch that they are present and that around 200 protesters have turned up for the demonstration. Of these, 10-15 have climbed onto the roof, where they are still staying at the time of writing.

According to the activists, by transporting military equipment to Israel, Maersk is supporting what the press release describes as Israeli genocide.

In early February, Danwatch revealed that 14 different Maersk-owned container ships had transported thousands of tons of military equipment to Israel 43 times between October 2023 and September 2024.

In a written response to ShippingWatch, Maersk wrote the following:

”The transportation of cargo on behalf of the US government does not contain weapons or ammunition. These shipments are related to US policy under the US-Israel Security Cooperation Program. The cargo has been screened and is legal and in compliance with applicable laws.”
