FIELD REPORT # 327: Mobil abandons clean-up of Atlantic coastline contaminated by its operations [Nigeria]

Cleanup of the Atlantic Shoreline…contaminated by [an] oil spill from Mobil…[Producing Nigeria]’s Qua Iboe Oil Fields on December 19, 2012 is yet to begin three weeks after the incident was reported. [F]ield monitors of the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria…revealed widespread and worsening pollution of the coastline by crude oil…John Etim…Iwuokpom Community [leader said]…“We spotted fresh oil deposits…and reported to Mobil and they came to inspect and collected samples…But up till now, they have not responded to clean it up”…Idem Joseph, fisherman, [said]…“Everyone knows that the pipes are corroded...[and] [w]eak…that is why the spills are…frequent…unfortunately…the government...has demonstrated its conspiracy with Mobil...There is no consideration for the environment and conservation matters...”
