...COP30 is a turning point for a just energy transition – one that tackles climate change while ensuring that no communities, workers, or countries are left behind. A decade after the Paris Agreement first recognised the need for justice in the energy transition, it has remained a COP blind spot, which has largely focused on carbon targets. This year, we must go beyond counting CO₂ and focus discussions around the materials dimensions and rules of a just energy transition. This includes reforming finance and trade systems that are perpetuating inequality and slowing climate action, as well as securing right-based minerals governance and a fair fossil fuels phase out that works for people in oil and gas dependent countries. COP30 must become the “Just Transition COP,” moving from talks to tangible action that leaves no one behind...
