India: Tea workers' union begins sit-in & relay fast over unpaid dues at ten Darjeeling Organic Tea plantations

"Tea workers started a relay fast in front of the Darjeeling District Court", 5 September 2022

Hill Terai Dooars Plantation Union, a labor organization of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha, has started a sit-in protest and a relay fast as part of the second phase of the movement from today in front of the Darjeeling District Court. The union has been protesting due to the non-payment of salaries and various other concessions to the workers of 10 tea plantations under Bansal Company’s Darjeeling Organic Tea. Women workers of Pandam Tea Garden and Happy Valley Tea Garden of Darjeeling took part in the first-day relay fast today.

The protesters who are on hunger strike have warned that the relay fast will continue until the government abides by their demands and gives justice to the tea workers who have been deprived. JB Tamang, President of Hill Terai Dooars Plantation Union, cheered up the tea workers who were in a sit-in protest today. According to the information, the workers of Ambotia Tea Garden and Montivoit Tea Garden will take part in the said relay hunger strike on the second day of the fast.
