On 7 May 2019, Jeremy Edwards, a 19-year-old Maryland man who barricaded himself inside a section of the natural gas pipeline Mountain Valley Pipeline, was charged with threats of terrorist acts and property destruction, both felonies, as well as obstruction and trespassing, which are misdemeanors. According to Appalachians Against Pipelines, the "unfounded, trumped up" felony charges are an attempt to "silence resistance" to the project. The MVP is a natural gas pipeline that runs from northern West Virginia to southern Virginia, with a 70-mile extension into North Carolina. MVP is a joint venture of a handful of companies, including NextEra Energy Inc. and EQT Midstream Partners LP.
