Journalist Rafael Marques Given Two Year Suspended Sentence In Angolan Defamation Trial

In court Thursday in Luanda, Angola, a judge found journalist Rafael Marques guilty of criminal defamation of Angolan military generals and gave him a two year suspended sentence. “It’s unbelievable,” Marques told Forbes. “I can be jailed [at any time] within two years. It hangs over my head until 2017, which means conveniently until elections in Angola.” Marques was charged with criminal defamation for writing about human rights abuses in his 2011 book “Blood Diamonds: Corruption And Torture In Angola”.  Several Angolan military generals own private security companies or mining companies that were responsible for an alleged 100 murders and 500 cases of torture, according to Marques’ book…Marques and his lawyer plan to appeal the decision to the Angolan Supreme Court.
