Kuwait: Construction workers at Kharafi National stranded without pay or valid visas

In November 2017, The Kathmandu Post reported allegations that 150 Nepali migrant workers employed by Kharafi National in Kuwait had been stranded without pay or valid visas for six months. Workers also claimed that their salaries were reduced from 110 KD, the amount originally promised before their departure to Kuwait, to 70 KD after their arrival. The Nepali government reportedly intervened to repatriate the stranded workers.

In January 2018, The Lede reported a series of allegations related to Indian workers at the same company. According to the report, some 5000 workers have been stuck in Kuwait for 18 months without being paid or having access to their passports. Over a third do not have access to food, drinking water or accommodation. According to a senior official at the Indian Embassy in Kuwait, the pending salaries amount to 8 million KD. The Indian government has held talks with Kuwaiti ministers to seek a resolution.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Kharafi National to respond to the allegations reported in November 2017; the company has not responded. The January 2018 news article reported that the company "has shut down its operations partially, citing economic conditions due to oil price dip" and we were thus unable to seek a response from the company.
