In February 2023, the Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) of Barong-Barong, Ipilan, Calasaguen, Aribungos, Mambalot, Maasin (BICAMM) Ancestral Domain of Brooke’s Point, Palawan in the Philippines petitioned the Supreme Court for a Writ of Kalikasan against Altai Philippines Mining Corporation (APMC), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau to halt APMC's nickel mining on Sibuyan Island. A Writ of Kalikasan is a unique legal remedy under Philippine law providing for the protection of one's constitutional right to a healthy environment.

The plaintiffs allege nickel mining is destroying protected natural resources and the area also called the “Galápagos of Asia", and is impacting the livelihoods of locals.

On 13 June 2023, the Supreme Court issued the Writ and referred the case to the Court of Appeals for further reception of evidence.

On 14 May 2024, the Court of Appeals dismissed the petition, ruling the plaintiffs failed to prove that APMC's activities endangered life, health, or property of two or more cities or provinces. The case is closed.
