S. Korea: Labour ministry inspection finds violations including workplace harassment, unpaid wages & denial of leave in IT and R&D sectors

"Inspection of companies preferred by young employees reveals 238 violations including over KRW 1.4 Billion in wage theft," 12 March 2024

The Ministry of Employment and Labor conducted planned supervision of a total of 60 companies in the information and communication industry and specialized research and development industry, including information technology (IT), online platform, and games, favored by young people and where they work in large numbers, and announced the results.

A total of 238 violations of the Labor Relations Act were found, including workplace bullying and sexual harassment, 1.4 billion won in unpaid wages, violation of overtime limits, and denial of leave (annual leave, insufficient compensatory leave, etc.).

... As a result of the inspection, one company that intentionally and habitually violated the law was immediately taken to court, and the Ministry plans to review the implementation status after other companies take corrective measures such as better managing working hours.

The inspection also identified a number of excellent labor management practices with high employee satisfaction, such as fair compensation through systematic management of working hours, guaranteed right to rest, and promotion of flexible work.
