South African miners dying of lung disease as lawsuit enters 7th year, lawyers say

Miners are dying as they await the resolution of a suit seeking to hold Anglo American's South African managers responsible for their lung disease…"A large percentage have died and many others are very sick," said Richard Meeran of the London firm Leigh Day & Co., who is working with Johannesburg's Legal Resource Center and Legal Aid South Africa in a case that began in 2004…Four of the 18 original plaintiffs have died since 2004, two in the last few months…Anglo American South Africa, the Johannesburg-based unit of…Anglo American, is named in Meeran's suit. Anglo American South Africa spokesman Pranill Ramchander [said] that his company had shares in the mines that employed the workers. Those companies, not Anglo American, were responsible for workers' health and safety, Ramchander said in an email. [also refers to Anglo Gold Ashanti]
