Spain: Govt. adopts legislation obliging gig delivery firms to recognise riders as employees
In March 2021, Spain’s government announced a deal to recognise riders working for delivery firms such as Deliveroo, UberEats and Glovo as salaried staff.
The move came following numerous complaints about riders' precarious working conditions and protests around the country calling on the government to approve the law.
The government’s deal with Spanish labour unions sets up the first legislation in Europe that explicitly regulates the status of delivery workers.
The deal got cabinet approval in May 2021, with companies being given 90 days to comply to the new regulations.
