Uganda: Chinese-owned Tian Tang Group reportedly granted permission to develop protected forest with deal lacking transparency; incl. co. non-response
An Ugandan news report in October 2025 has alleged the Chinese-owned Tian Tang Group over its role in the controversial allocation of 150 acres of Kitubulu Central Forest Reserve for commercial development. In the report, it was stated that the group obtained the approval from President Museveni throguh the help of State Minister Evelyn Anite, who submitted misleading information about the forest.
The report further cites watchdogs and conservation organizations, accusing government officials of colluding with Tian Tang through opaque licensing processes that favored commercial gain over environmental protection.
The Business and Human Rights Resource Center reached out to Tian Tang Group for comment. The company did not respond.
On 20 January 2026, President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the cancellation of all land titles issued within the Kitubulu Central Forest Reserve, reiterating that his earlier approval for commercial development there was based on incorrect information and emphasizing the forest’s vital role in protecting Lake Victoria’s ecosystem.
