At around midnight on January 12, 2022, at least six armed men violently entered the property of Congolese lawyer Timothée Mbuya in Lubumbashi, the Katanga provincial capital, where Mbuya’s wife and children and several members of his extended family were sleeping. Timothée Mbuya is an environmental rights defender and leader of the human rights organisation Justicia Asbl. Mbuya is also facing a defamation lawsuit after publishing a report alleging encroachment of a protected area by the farm Ferme Espoir, owned by former DRC president, and had appeared in court two days before the attack. The farm produces corn and poultry and covers at least 700 hectares. The company owns and operates several large-scale farms around the country and is one of the DRC’s largest agribusiness players.
