On 21 September 2023, two members of the Dayak Banjar Indigenous people from the community of Bangkal in Indonesia were shot at with tear gas by the police. Previously the community had entered into negotiations with palm oil company PT Hamparan Massawit Bangun Persada (HMBP), subsidiary of Best Agro, who supposedly refused to comply with the community demands, which resulted in protests by the community.

On 23 September 2023 Taufik Nurrahman and Ambaryanto were injured in protests.

On 7 October 2023, the community staged another protest against the company for occupying their territories which again was met with police repression. The police shot and killed human rights defender Gijik, and injured Taufik Nurahman. At least 12 people were arrested.
