Agustín "El Roque" Valdez, head of surveillance for the Traditional Guard of the Yaqui tribe and son of Guillermo Valdez Castillo, traditional governor of Loma de Guamúchil, was gunned down by a group of hired killers while attending a party. The armed attack took place in the indigenous community of Loma de Guamúchil, one of the eight villages that make up the ethnic group in southern Sonora. Witnesses said the 30-year-old had been out partying with friends and family when he was surprised by gunmen who shot him at point-blank range. Agustín Valdez, 30, known as "El Roque", was one of the heads of the Traditional Guard and leader of the blockade of the Mexico 15 Federal Highway, which members of the tribe have intermittently imposed in demand of accession rights, which they negotiate to attract greater resources for the people who lend their territory.
