Canada: Filipino workers win retaliation case against Best Western hotel after being dismissed for raising complaints

In May 2204, it was reported that Filipino migrant hotel workers were subjected to labour rights violations in Manitoba, Canada. Abuses include the denial of leave, verbal abuse, and surveillance.

One of the workers alleges the employer sought ways to dismiss them after they raised complaints. The workers felt unable to change employers as they were on temporary employer-tied visas.

A lot of Filipino have dream to work and live here in Canada…This is a big problem for a closed work permit (where you must work for a specific employer).
John Maravilla, employee at the hotel.

In June 2025, it was reported that the hotel, Best Western Thompson Hotel & Suites had violated the rights of three of the Filipino workers by dismissing them after they reported mistreatment to authorities.

The hotel’s manager did not respond to the journalist’s requests; and Best Western also declined to comment.
