On 7 November 2024, Soeu Sochea, an online journalist who actively reported on environmental and deforestation issues and illegal logging in Kampong Thom province in Cambodia, was sentenced to one year in prison for “incitement to discrimination” under Article 496 of the Criminal Code. He was arrested on 24 May 2024 after producing a live video criticizing the deforestation activities in the province. The arrest followed a lawsuit filed by the Provincial Environmental Department on 20 May 2024 for incitement and defamation. He served five months and 15 days in prison since his detention, and the rest of the sentence was suspended, but he will be supervised for three years.
