USA: Tiktok responds to the increasing pressure over its supposed pro-Palestine bias affecting young Americans, cites higher pro-Palestine rates among youth; calls for better data transparency

TikTok faced allegations from some US lawmakers and tech investors that it was using its algorithm to promote pro-Palestine propaganda, based on global data that showed Palestine-related hashtags were more popular than Israel ones. TikTok rejected those claims, citing higher rate of pro-Palestine sentiment among younger Americans even prior to the creation of the platform. These claims also rely partly on the Chinese ownership of Tiktok with US politicians claiming its attempting to influence young American voters. Independent research has shown that there's evidence that interest in hashtags related to the conflict is roughly split between both sides in the U.S. while pro-Palestine sentiment prevail in non-western countries. Tiktok claimed that while the pro-Palestine hashtags have more content created worldwide, the pro-Israel content gets an alleged “68 percent more views per video in the U.S.", which would dispel any claims for a pro-Palestinian bias. Further complicating the "accusations", Tiktok allegedly promoted Israel as the top trending news-related hashtag in the U.S. to advertisers while the Palestine hashtag went unmentioned despite its well documented popularity.

Researchers and scholars focusing on social media platforms stated the need for better data transparency from platforms.
