China: Online call by 15-year-old prompts official intervention as developer fails to resettle residents

Official intervention following online call for help by 15-year-old from Pingdingshan; Reorganisation in order for bankrupt developer

Liu Moukun, a 15-year-old boy from Pingdingshan, Henan Province, claimed that his family house was demolished due to the development of the "Urban Village" project in 2019. The developer failed to deliver the new houses as agreed, leaving him and his family in a predicament. Liu's father has died of illness and he has two bedridden elderly family members at home. [...]

On 17 December 2021, the Zhanhe District Government of Pingdingshan issued a statement on this matter, stating that Liu Mokun lived with his father, grandmother and grandfather. After Liu's house was demolished, he received RMB180,000 in compensation, which had been paid for. After the demolition, they have been living in another house of their own. The developer was unable to deliver the resettlement units as promised because the project had been on hold due to a lack of cash. At present, the government has properly resettled Liu and his family. Zhanhe District has promised to speed up the "bankruptcy and reorganisation" of the developer in accordance with the law, and further assist Liu and his family, and guide them to defend their rights in accordance with the law.

Liu Mokun claimed that the “house of their own” mentioned was in fact his aunt’s house. At that time, it was agreed that one year after the demolition, the developer would deliver the new house and he and his grandfather would live at his aunt’s place. However, his father has now passed away, his grandparent are bedridden, and the developer is unable to deliver the house. They have no money to build the house, and are in trouble. [...]
