Domingo Pedro Esteban and Nery Pedro Esteban were considered opposition leaders against the construction of a hydroelectric plant in the area, being constructed by Energía y Renovación S.A. They were killed on December 16th 2018, which caused outrage inside and outside the Bella Linda community, where the bodies were found. Various organizations have spoken out against the violence in the area, causing the authorities, civil and religious organizations, as well as representatives of various communities and the private sector, to come together to sign a 'peace agreement'. The company said it repudiated and deeply regretted the murder and called on "the Public Ministry and the Police to clarify the cause of death of the two persons who were victims of violence in the area".
