Global Business Initiative on Human Rights publishes briefing on embedding human rights in governance processes

GBI

"What "good" looks like – Embedding human rights in governance processes: Lessons from practice", 28 May 2025

GBI is pleased to announce the latest guidance briefing in the “What “good” looks like” series. Drawing on over 16 years of practice-based insights from our work with companies implementing human rights due diligence (HRDD) under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), this series aims to share practical lessons from business experience. It is designed to support both companies and policymakers as they navigate growing expectations and requirements for meaningful human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD).

Our guidance briefing on embedding human rights in governance processes focusses on ways in which companies can develop policy commitments, put in place governance and accountability systems to support those commitments, and build internal capacity to implement the company’s respect for human rights.

The briefing highlights “good” practice for companies to embed human rights across their operations and activities, including several examples from GBI’s engagement with companies. It also provides considerations for policymakers as they develop HREDD legislation, namely that effective human rights regulation should be designed to reinforce and support company efforts to establish the necessary internal structures, governance processes and accountability.
