India: Telangana Govt. calls for public input on draft Bill on gig workers

"Place Gig Workers draft Bill in public domain for stakeholders views: Telangana CM", 14 April 2025

..Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the officials concerned to place the draft Bill envisaging job security, insurance coverage and other amenities to gig and platform workers in public domain for eliciting the views of the stakeholders. The officials have been directed to take into consideration the suggestions, recommendations and objections from the people in the preparation of the final Bill. This will be the second Bill after Bhu Bharati (Record of Rights) Act to be placed in public domain before its enactment.

There were over four lakh gig workers engaged in food delivery, transport, package delivery and other trades in the State. Steps should be taken to take views and recommendations from all sections. Officials should focus on giving final touches to the provisions that would be incorporated in the proposed legislation.

.. The deadline was set to ensure that the Act would come into force from May 1, coinciding with the International Labour Day. Mr. Reddy recalled that the Congress party had promised to bring a comprehensive legislation to protect the interests of gig and platform workers ahead of the previous [2023] Assembly elections. The Congress government had issued an order on December 30, 2023 providing accidental insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh each to the families of gig and platform workers who met with an accidental death.
