On 30 June 2025, Fox Petroli S.p.A. filed a civil defamation lawsuit against environmental defenders Roberto Malini and Lisetta Sperindei. The two defenders are members of “PESARO: NO LNG”, a grassroots citizens’ committee opposing the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in the Tombaccia neighbourhood of Pesaro, Italy. In May 2025, the PESARO: NO LNG Committee filed a formal environmental complaint against Fox Petroli S.p.A., calling for an investigation. They also issued a press release announcing their action, which was published on the news platform ImgPress. In the civil lawsuit, the company accuses Roberto and Lisetta of spreading false information about its operations and demands two million euros in damages. The lawsuit followed the rejection of Fox Petroli’s planned LNG facility by the Regional Technical Committee, which deemed it a high-risk project. On 29 September 2025, a mediation hearing with Fox Petroli took place, but no resolution was reached. The case will go to trial, with the first hearing scheduled for 22 December 2025. We invited the company to respond; it did. A rejoinder from the defenders is available here.
