Mexico: Water defender criminalised; incl. company non-response

On 1 July 2025, Renato Romero Camacho, a prominent water defender from Puebla, Mexico, was arrested following his involvement in a peaceful protest against the privatization of water services by the company Agua de Puebla. The protest aimed to demand transparency and accountability regarding water management and to oppose corporate control over this essential resource. Romero was detained and charged in connection with the protest, leading to his incarceration at the San Pedro Cholula penitentiary. Human rights organisations condemned the arrest as an attempt to intimidate and silence activists defending community water rights. After international and national pressure, Romero was granted conditional liberty and released on 3 July 2025.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Agua de Puebla to respond, it did not.
