[PDF] Mining matters: Unacceptable metal mining in developing countries and the responsibilities of companies in the Netherlands

This report shows that there are huge problems with regard to mining in developing countries, including loss of livelihood and health risks to communities; devastation of rich ecosystems; poor working conditions of miners; child labour; fuelling war and oppression. Several large Dutch companies which import and process tin, bauxite and copper are linked with these problems through their supply chain. However, these companies do not yet appear to feel a strong responsibility for the mining practices occurring upstream in their supply chains. [refers to Cookson/Alpha-Fry Technologies, Corus, Klesch & Company, Draka, Philips, Heineken, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Coca-Cola, and includes responses to questionnaires by these companies. Also refers to Rio Blanco (part of Monterrico Metals, owned by Zijin), Doe Run (part of Renco), Nonferrous Metals, Mopani Copper, PT Freeport Indonesia (part of Freeport-McMoRan)]
