Snap responded
The Business and Human Rights Centre invited Snap to respond to the publication "Addicted to the algorithm: How Big Tech lobbies to keep us hooked on social media" by Corporate Europe Observatory. Snap responded.
We are deeply committed to helping ensure the safety of the Snap community. Our goal is to help Snapchatters communicate with their close friends and family in an environment that prioritizes their safety and reduces potential online risks.
It is why Snapchat was intentionally designed to be different from traditional social media and why we have built privacy and safety features into our services. Our policies are designed to help ensure a safe environment for all Snapchatters. You can read more about our safety measures here.
Snapchat opens into the camera and offers a fast, fun way to communicate visually with friends and family, to share the moment, in the moment, and help people feel together even if they are physically far apart. Snapchat’s number one use case is staying connected with friends, not scrolling through a public feed. Independent research shows Snapchat’s positive impact on well-being and friendship closeness.
We support thoughtful regulation and regularly meet with policymakers to discuss issues we are mutually focused on. We share the EU’s objective of protecting consumers from unfair, misleading, and harmful practices in the digital environment and firmly believe that tech companies have a responsibility to continuously build and improve their products in ways that better serve society.
