bp's company response re natural gas in West Papua
[...] I write in connection with your email communication to us on 12 May 2025 regarding commentary published in the German newspaper Neue Deutschland.
bp, as a government contractor, has been operating the Tangguh LNG facility in Teluk Bintuni Regency, Papua Barat Province, since 2009. We are committed to responsible forest management practices in and around the Tangguh project, as well as in forest rehabilitation activity across Papua Barat Province.
At Tangguh our team is predominantly Indonesian, with over 99% of members being Indonesian nationals. Additionally, Papuan workers make up over 70% of the workforce operating Tangguh Trains 1, 2, and 3. Over 80% of the workforce engaged in the rehabilitation land planting and maintenance activities are indigenous communities surrounding the Tangguh site.
Pursuant to the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry Decree in 2004, the Government of Indonesia allocated 3,380 hectares of land for Tangguh LNG project. However, the actual land use for Tangguh Trains 1, 2, and 3 is limited to approximately 650 hectares of land, of which only 8 hectare is mangrove forest, and in accordance with bp practices we aim to avoid and minimize impacts to sensitive areas, such as these mangrove forests.
We are actively involved in the management and restoration of mangrove forests. Despite utilizing approximately 650 hectares of land from the total allocation, the Tangguh LNG project has successfully rehabilitated over 1,320 hectares of forest (the majority of which are mangrove forests) in Weriagar and Kamundan, Bintuni Regency. This surpasses twice the area utilized for the Tangguh LNG operation.
Additionally, Tangguh LNG is preparing for the next phase of its forest rehabilitation plan and bp's total rehabilitation area is expected to ultimately reach 6,984 hectares.
This effort has received recognition and appreciation from the Indonesian Government, including acknowledgment from the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya.
Thank you again for your communication; bp will continue to engage constructively in discussion with BHRRC. [...]
