Following a June 2026 report by RAID, new scientific evidence has exposed industrial-scale air, water, and sediment pollution around major copper and cobalt mines in the DRC's Lualaba Province, revealing toxic concentrations of fine dust and heavy metals that pose severe health risks to local communities. Glencore and CMOC engaged with the investigation and provided detailed statements. BHRRC also contacted Zijin Mining, whose subsidiary COMMUS operates in the affected area.

COMMUS said it takes the environmental and community health concerns raised in the reports very seriously, while noting that pollution in the Kolwezi area results from multiple factors including natural geological backgrounds and historical mining activities, requiring comprehensive assessment against long-term data. The company stated it holds ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications, conducts regular third-party monitoring showing air quality generally meets applicable standards, and that wastewater discharges into the Musonoi River consistently comply with permit requirements. COMMUS committed to engaging independent third-party institutions to conduct seasonal monitoring at locations referenced in the reports, deepen community engagement, and participate in cross-regional environmental governance alongside government agencies and industry peers.
