Argentina: Labour reform approved by the Senate amid protests and claims of unconstitutionality

Agência Brasil - EBC

On 27 February 2026, the labour reform proposed by President Javier Milei was approved by the Argentine Senate by 42 votes in favour, 28 against and two abstentions. The bill now proceeds to presidential assent.

While the government argues that the reform modernises rules considered rigid and outdated, with the aim of reducing labour costs, increasing legal certainty and encouraging the creation of formal employment, trade unions and social movements maintain that the changes reduce longstanding rights and weaken collective bargaining.
