Asian logging firm fined K225.5m [Papua New Guinea]

National Court judge Justice Cathy Davani has ordered a Malaysian logger Concord Pacific Limited to pay a hefty K225.5 million to four tribes in the Western Province for illegal logging, causing massive environmental damage...An elated principal lawyer and CELCOR executive director Damien Ase told the Post-Courier yesterday that the decision would send a clear message to logging companies not to operate in a similar nature as Concord Pacific Limited...“The devastating effects..., among others, are the constant heavy erosion, constant flooding, and destruction of food gardens and lack of game for consumption and commercial purposes...,” Judge Davani’s judgment read...The Post-Courier contacted Concord Pacific...A person [there]...said the court decision is ridiculous because the company Concord Pacific Limited has packed up and left when their timber permit expired in 2003.
