Bangladesh: Of nearly 200 worker protests reported in 2022, over half occurred in the garment sector over wages & lay-offs

At least 196 incidents of labour unrest mostly in demand of their arrears took place in 2022 in the country while 1169 were killed at workplaces, reports Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies on Monday.

The highest 115 labour protests took place in readymade garment sector while 15 incidents occurred in Bidi sector, 14 in jute and 11 in transport and 10 in textile industries in the year.

BILS reported that highest 89 labour unrest were organised for arrears, 19 for reopening the shut factories, 11 for wage hike, seven protesting at the factory lay-off and six for bonus while the rest were for other demands.

In the incidents, at least 10 workers including three women were injured.

According to the BILS report, the incident of labour unrest decreased in Bangladesh as 431 labour unrest incidents were recorded in 2021 while it was 593 in 2020...
